Fungal Infection

5 min read

Fungal infections (Tinea) are among the most common skin diseases affecting people of all ages. They are caused by fungi that thrive in warm and humid environments and can affect the skin, groin, feet, hands, scalp, face, and nails.

If not treated properly, fungal infections can spread to other body parts, recur frequently, and affect family members through close contact.

Symptoms of Fungal Infection

  • Itching
  • Red, scaly patches
  • Ring-shaped lesions
  • Thickened or discolored nails
  • Hair loss in scalp fungal infections

Types of Fungal Infections

  • Tinea Corporis (Body Ringworm)
  • Tinea Cruris (Jock Itch)
  • Tinea Faciei (Face)
  • Tinea Pedis (Athlete's Foot)
  • Tinea Manuum (Hands)
  • Tinea Capitis (Scalp Fungal Infection)
  • Tinea Unguium (Fungal Nail Infection)
  • Pityriasis Versicolor

Causes & Risk Factors

Fungal infections are more common in:

  • Hot and humid climates
  • Excessive sweating
  • Tight-fitting clothing
  • Sharing towels, clothes, or footwear
  • Weakened immunity
  • Incomplete or improper treatment of previous infections

Use of steroid-containing creams without medical supervision can worsen fungal infections and make them more difficult to treat.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually made through a detailed clinical examination. In selected cases, tests such as KOH examination, fungal microscopy, or laboratory investigations may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the site, severity, and duration of infection.

Treatment options may include:

  • Anti-fungal creams and lotions
  • Oral anti-fungal medications
  • Hygiene and preventive advice
  • Treatment of affected family members when required

Completing the full course of treatment is essential to prevent recurrence.

How to Prevent Recurrence?

  • Keep the skin clean and dry
  • Avoid sharing towels and clothing
  • Wear loose cotton clothes
